Grid is a unique series of sculptural wooden lights by Belgian designer Maarten De Ceulaer created using revolutionary manufacturing processes.

Grid series are an endeavor beyond that of a creating a typical lamp, it is a luminous design project that blends art, craftsmanship and advanced 2.0 LED technology. The was unveiled at DesignMiami/ by design and art dealer Victor Hunt

Grids are milled in the top and bottom of solid wood planks, allowing them to be bent in fluid 3-dimensional curves. They subsequently are filled with an elaborate electrical circuit, connecting hundreds of LEDs. The wooden planks are transformed into cyborg-like, illuminating surfaces. Hand-crafted from a beautiful natural material, these planks can be plugged into a computer, and the movement of the light can be programmed.

The design is so undeniably futuristic that hey seem to come from a virtual reality world, while their liquid lines are reminiscent 3D-modelling software. To freeze the shape and solidify the piece, the grids are filled up with resin. The end result is a spectacular futuristic creation unlike any other wooden lamps we have seen before.

The collection includes two different variations, pendant lamp hanging graciously from the ceiling, or an equally elegant wall lamp stretching along the wall like a surface of light.

“During our research, we discovered the Swiss company Dukta, which has been working on techniques to make wood flexible for many years. Together with their production company Schneider, they have given me great technical assistance during the development of this project, and I would once again like to thank them for their generous support” says Maarten De Ceulaer.
