Bavarian firm BMW has a 35 year long tradition of offering cars to famous artists to be used as palettes. Starting since 1975, 17 BMW Art Cars have been created by well-known artists such as the BMW M1 by Andy Warhol in 1979 and the BMW 320i by Roy Lichtenstein in 1977. This year it was Jeff Koons’s turn to paint the BMW M3 GT2 which raced at the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Within his preparatory framework, Koons studied pictures of explosions and car race accidents, which according to his viewpoint reflect the tension and the dangerous fascination of racing.

Jeff Κoons worked closely with the “BMW Rahal Letterman” racing team in order to see the car in action and to determine the dynamics that had to be captured by this unique creation. The result is impressive as it manages to combine uniquely many and vibrant colors, while the style of the colorful lines on the car is so aggressive that even when it is still, it gives the impression of movement.

Jeff Koons is known to be very eccentric and bold and it is not unusual for him to shock the public with extreme creations. In this case, however, he managed to captivate the spirit of racing and create a true artwork on 4 wheels. The 17th BMW Art Car presentation was held last June in Paris and the public had the opportunity to admire the car near the Pompidou Exhibition Centre without paying an admission ticket.
