Figurative Sculptures Embedded In Gallery Walls by Matteo Pugliese.

Figurative Sculptures by Matteo Pugliese

Milan based Italian Sculptor Matteo Pugliese creates breathtaking sculptures of men that appear as if they are trying to escape from the gallery walls.

His unique bronze figurative sculptures are made from multiple parts and display men that appear to be trapped in the vertical space of gallery walls. The figures really do appear as if they’re in perpetual motion, in action, escaping from something, trying to set themselves free from some kind of entrapment or restriction. Matteo Pugliese’s metal sculptures are impressive and aesthetically pleasing, yet they convey a sense of dynamism and will to escape some invisible barrier.

Spomenik, The Monuments of Former Yugoslavia.

Category: Art Various

Spomenik The Monuments of Former Yugoslavia

In the rugged, mountainous regions of the former Yugoslavia, Spomeniks are everywhere. You’ll see them on strategic outcrops, lofty passes and sweeping plateaus: gigantic sculptures, firmly anchored to the rocks. They are objects of stunning beauty.

Translated the word Spomenik means “Monument”, these gigantic, unusual, monuments are the reminiscences of a different era. Their abstract geometric shapes recall macro views of viruses, flower-petal goblets, crystals. They are built of indestructible materials like reinforced concrete, steel and granite. Some are solid, others hollow. The largest Spomeniks even afford access to the public, teetering on the boundary where sculpture becomes architecture.

Sculpture by Motohiko Odani

Motohiko Odani is a well known contemporary Japanese sculptor whose imaginative, elegant, yet unsettling works leave the viewer breathless.

“Right now I have this strong Futurist interest in how to capture the concepts of movement and transformation, dynamism and speed in sculpture” Odani said. He also stated that he hopes to “give form to what the eyes cannot see…the phantoms that are hidden inside us,” his work (as if by a process of transference) is full of unsettling sensations: unsettling because they feel contradictory. With his stunning creations Motohiko Odani is reaching at the ever-important themes of death, love, national identity and the ethereal spiritual side of life, through abstract concepts characterized by his own unique personal style.

Adhesive tape Art Installations by Monika Grzymala

Berlin Based Polish artist Monika Grzymala creates dramatic art installations using several kilometers of black adhesive tape.

The tape looks like a complex drawing, it covers archways, creates barriers, and spreads throughout the surrounding space like a chaotic three-dimensional net. While Grzymala’s focus is largely abstract, the black lines of these impressive art installations cannot help but hold subtle resonance with the complex nets of architectural blueprints and design drawings. There is also a strong performative element as each piece requires a huge physical effort to create.
