Calamares Chandelier with fluorescent lamps.

Category: Lighting

Strada Calamares Chandelier

Calamares chandelier was designed by artist Tom Strada and uses fluorescent lamps as a structural element, creating an eye-catching pattern composed of countless bright rings.

The need to conserve energy and preserve our fragile ecosystem has made it imperative to phase out all incandescent lamps and replace them with fluorescent bulbs (also known as “economy lamps”). But what happens to the aesthetic value of a chandelier? The sight of a chandelier with 50+ large fluorescent lamps is definitely not something aesthetically attractive.

Tom Strada tackles the issue by converting the bulky fluorescent lamps into the highlight of the design. Calamares is a simple structure which transforms the fluorescent lamps into a stylish illuminated object which produces plenty of light, while maintaining low energy consumption.

Natsumi Hayashi, Tokyo’s levitating girl.

Category: Art

Natsumi Hayashi the Levitating Girl

Natsumi Hayashi is a Japanese teenager with an ordinary hobby: taking pictures. But the special way of taking her pictures makes them really extraordinary. In her stunning photos she seemingly bends the laws of nature and looks as if she was levitating.

For some time Natsumi maintained her own photography blog where she was posting photos from her daily life in Tokyo. One day she posted a photo titled “Today’s Levitation” where she looked appeared levitating for the first time. This picture ignited a whole new concept and Natsumi decided that her blog shall become a “levitation blog”. In order to reproduce the result of that photo, Natsumi began practicing daily, by leaping and taking photos of herself. With a lot of practice she managed to reach a point where her body and face don’t look strained, and her hair, clothes and accessories aren’t flailing about. This technique conveys a sense of levitation and floating.

United Nude Lo Res Chair.

Category: Furniture

Lo Res Chair

The Lo Res Chair was designed with the aid of specialized software that re-designs existing objects and reshapes them to new modernized versions of their former figure. In the case of Lo Res Chair, the basis was the iconic Panton Chair which was designed by Verner Panton for Vitra in the 60′s.

Interestingly the Lo Res process was developed by United Nude which is best known for their innovative shoes. The Lo Res method includes digitizing an object through three-dimensional scanning. Then, the three-dimensional shape of the object is depicted on a computer and through special software the object’s resolution is lowered (making the object more pixelated) and a Low-Resolution version of the initial item is created, hence the name “Lo Res”.

Cubrik-Lamp-by-Antoni-Arola-Ferrer-for-Santa-and-Cole

The Cubrik lamp is yet another exquisite object made in the incredibly design-producing city of Barcelona. I was designed by Antoni Arola Ferrer for Santa & Cole and owes its name to the famous Rubik’s cube

The Cubrik family was born in 2005 with two cube-shaped hanging lamps consisting of 36 and 100 plates respectively. Antoni  Arola’s idea was to make a large-sized cubical lamp that would offer as many possibilities of composition as there are moods, so that the user could have a different lamp at any given moment. By rotating the plates the Cubrik Lamp can take countless different shapes, offering a nearly infinite variety of light reflections.
