Oscar Niemeyer Mural in Sao Paulo by Eduardo Kobra

Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra has just finished his tribute to famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, who passed away last December at the age of 104. The iconic mural is 52 meters tall, 16 meters wide and it covers the entire side of a skyscraper on Paulista Avenue, one of Sao Paulo’s busiest streets.

Eduardo Kobra, created a monumental work of art, a tribute to his compatriot, Oscar Niemeyer, an architect who is considered to be one of the key figures in the development of modern architecture. The graffiti artist, chose to paint a mural on the side of a skyscraper in the heart of the city of Sao Paulo. Kobra recreates Niemeyer’s face by assembling together countless colorful geometric elements into a colossal patchwork. The shapes he uses are not angular, but rather soft and round. After all the use of abstract forms and curves characterized Nimeyers’ work. “I am not attracted to straight angles or to the straight line, hard and inflexible, created by man. I am attracted to free-flowing, sensual curves.” – Oscar Niemeyer.

Artistic Typography: Alphabetical by Dan Tobin Smith.

Category: Art

Dan Tobin Smith Alphabetical

Alphabetical is an ongoing project by photographer Dan Tobin Smith that explores typography and perspective using random materials such as discarded objects, flowers, broken glass, light, wood, even scissors.

Each Letter has a different approach but uses Helvetica as the base typography. Most are temporary installations, some use landscape and some were conceived as primarily moving image (such as Letter T). Every single letter is a unique artwork in its own right. Hundreds of flowers assume the shape of letter S, the letter V is composed of pieces of broken glass and letter U materializes by arranging together countless scissors suspended from the ceiling. Every letter is an impressive display of imagination and creativity, but the whole collection together is just mind-blowing.

Figurative Sculptures by Matteo Pugliese

Milan based Italian Sculptor Matteo Pugliese creates breathtaking sculptures of men that appear as if they are trying to escape from the gallery walls.

His unique bronze figurative sculptures are made from multiple parts and display men that appear to be trapped in the vertical space of gallery walls. The figures really do appear as if they’re in perpetual motion, in action, escaping from something, trying to set themselves free from some kind of entrapment or restriction. Matteo Pugliese’s metal sculptures are impressive and aesthetically pleasing, yet they convey a sense of dynamism and will to escape some invisible barrier.

Spomenik, The Monuments of Former Yugoslavia.

Spomenik The Monuments of Former Yugoslavia

In the rugged, mountainous regions of the former Yugoslavia, Spomeniks are everywhere. You’ll see them on strategic outcrops, lofty passes and sweeping plateaus: gigantic sculptures, firmly anchored to the rocks. They are objects of stunning beauty.

Translated the word Spomenik means “Monument”, these gigantic, unusual, monuments are the reminiscences of a different era. Their abstract geometric shapes recall macro views of viruses, flower-petal goblets, crystals. They are built of indestructible materials like reinforced concrete, steel and granite. Some are solid, others hollow. The largest Spomeniks even afford access to the public, teetering on the boundary where sculpture becomes architecture.

Flux Cocoon in Lausanne Switzerland by Allegory

The Flux Cocoon light installation was designed by Allegory and is one of the winning projects of the Lausanne Lumières, the city’s first light festival.

This impressive illuminated art installation was realized using flexible strings of LED lights wrapped around a wooden and metal structure. Then the whole composition was placed around a pedestrian bridge at Lausanne’s city center enveloping part of the bridge in an intense outlandish yet fascinating red glow. Installed in an extremely difficult context Flux Cocoon is a temporary shelter over the pedestrian bridge and gripped on the vertical elevators’ building. Visible from a 360° point of view, the Flux Cocoon is a stunning light art installation that invites the viewer not only to admire it from a distance but also to venture inside and explore it at close proximity.
