Frozen Vases by Studio 4p1b for De Vecchi Milano.

Frozen Vases

Studio 4p1b and De Vecchi Milano 1935 created a series of impressive sculptural vases whose forms depend on the expansion of water inside them.

When the vases are cooled to 273 degrees kelvin (0 degrees celcius), the water turns into ice and gives form to the vase. All the initial forms are identical,
but the end result is completely original. Every vase is entirely unique, as water always expands in subtly different ways. Each piece of the collection has a form, which cannot be designed but comes itself, is so unique even if following all the same process.

rEvolution wine glass by Martin Jakobsen.

Category: Kitchen

Wine Glass Jakobsen

rEvolution is an aesthetically eccentric and ergonomically different wine glass designed by Martin Jakobsen from the Czech Republic.

The aim of this unique wine glass is to introduce a new way of drinking, based on shifting the imbibing position from horizontal to vertical. Whether you’re a traditionalist and prefer a stemmed wine glass or you like the informality of a stemless glass, you’ll appreciate this innovative design by Martin Jakobsen.

The rEvolution’s angular placement of the stem on the side of the glass isn’t just revolutionary; it’s also practical for both pouring and drinking. “It is very practical to pour and drink – you will be surprised with your nose inside the glass.” says Martin. rEvolution was officially launched at the Formland event in Denmark which ran from the 12th to the 15th of January 2012.

th Dimension Concrete Clock by 22 Design Studio

The 4th Dimension clock by 22 Design Studio is a contemporary, architectural clock made of cement, the form of the clock is like a spiral staircase with hands that continuously go up and down each hourly step as time goes by.

We all know that space is defined by 3 dimensions. However the reality that surrounds us consists of at least four dimensions, with time being the forth. Taiwanese firm 22 Design Studio, founded by Sean Yu and Yi-ting Cheng in 2005, created a wall clock made of concrete in order to remind us the four-dimensional nature of reality, a tactile object related to time. Light and shadow changes with time in this clock, courtesy of its sculpted ever-changing face. The concept of 4th Dimension Clock is to link time and space.

Vanishing Point – Renaissance Perspective Drawing with Lasers by United Visual Artists.

Vanishing Point - renaissance perspective drawing with lasers by United Visual Artists (UVA)

London based UVA (United Visual Artists) use architectural design and laser beams to create an impressive light installation, where the past meets the future.

Vanishing Point employs perspective as both tool and visual outcome to reshape, redefine and represent a space. Inspired by sketches of Leon Battista Alberti, Leonardo DaVinci and Albrecht Dürer, UVA sends lines into space from an arbitrary vanishing point, creating different volumes, divisions and rooms to be explored by the audience.

During the Renaissance artists wanted to elevate the art of painting and raise it to the standards of senior arts. The only way to do this in the context of humanistic approach was to bring painting closer to what we now call science and in this case closer to mathematics and geometry. In order to do that they had to adopt new principles or “rules” of painting and suggest a theory around it. That way painting would meet the standards of other forms of art, such as sculpting and architecture. Driven by this historical journey of painting UVA brings the centuries- old project into present time.

Wonder Cabinets of Europe launches in New York.

Wonder Cabinets of Europe

Inspired by the cabinets of curiosity, or wonder cabinets that once traveled around Europe as the first iteration of what later become the modern day museum, curators, and designers themselves Livia Lauber and Maria Jeglinska, invited six designers from five European countries to create their own personal cabinet of curiosities for the Wonder Cabinets of Europe. The venture started life as a European project and each designer was given a wooden cabinet with a brief to showcase their work as well as their working methods.

On Monday 20th of May,  the touring exhibition Wonder Cabinets of Europe has arrived in New York, at ICFF – Jacob K. Javits Convection Centre, stand 3110. Jonah Takagi, the first US designer to be involved in the project, and Matylda Krzykowski have joined the existing line up of emerging talents, including Maria Jeglinska, Loris&Livia, Pauline Deltour, Oscar Diaz, Kueng Caputo and Harry Thaler. The exhibition is essentially a visual study into the creative process.

LightSKIN built-in Bicycle LED Tail Light.

Category: Lighting Technology

LightSKIN Bicycle Built-In LED Tail Light

Korean brand LightSKIN created an innovative LED bicycle tail light that combines elegant aesthetics and usability.

Behind the creation of this built-in tail light is a user’s simple habit: in order to store and protect something valuable we safekeep it into some sort of storage unit. The common bicycle tail lights are always add-ons prone to accidents. They can easily get damaged or knocked over, not to mention that they can easily get stolen. Compared to existing tail lights, LightSKIN has numerous advantages. Without protruding parts, it has little risk of being damaged. Additionally, whereas the existing tail lights are susceptible to theft because they are easily spotted, LightSKIN enjoys a low possibility of being stolen. Aesthetically, the simple and minimal design allows it to fit to all types of bicycles and has earned LightSKIN a “red dot design award” for best product design in 2010.
